Working our way back to Water Turbines
Water turbines are of course not a new concept, water turbines have been used to create power since the 19th century, where they were predominately used in industry, although it is documented that the Romans used water turbines also. These days, since the introduction of electrical grids wind turbines are still being utilised, but are deployed to create electric. If you live near a free flowing stream or river you can install a water turbine, with the correct planning of course.
Wind turbines are particularly attractive as a power source as they are a pollutant free and renewable energy source. Furthermore water turbines can successfully operate for decades and present a very cost effective way of producing energy. There are however some potential drawbacks of using water turbines that should be noted, mainly these derive from the fact that dams need to be installed when water turbine are used for power production. In a nutshell dams change the ecology of native rivers which can have potentially huge impacts on the lives of those who use the river for their livelihood, fishing etc.
Over the last few years eco friendly builds have become increasingly popular with a variety of people looking to build themselves an eco friendly and self sufficient home in many terms including power supply, for their family and their families'future generations. Consequently when land or adaptable current builds are being sort to create an eco friendly home, a site next to a water supply if very favourable as it enables the use of water turbine to power the home. You would of course need an experienced architect to help you build a home around such a power source, finding one who has worked o such projects before if essential if you want to avert a professional negligence claim!
