There are so many gadgets and gizmos in our daily lives that is can be hard to keep track of the all. In an office alone there countless pieces of technological wonders from computers to state of the art franking machines. But not all technology started life in the electronic era; the humble franking machine has been around since 1902. The inventor of the franking machine was a Mr Arthur H. Pitney and he devised the machine to stop the office boys from stealing stamps. The machine was made a reality by mechanical engineer Eugene A. Rummler in 1902 and by 1903 a machine was installed at the US Post Office Headquarters in Washington DC.

It wasn’t until Pitney met Walter Bowes that the idea really took off, in 1912 Bowes wrote to the 3rd assistant postmaster general and expressed an interest in the Pitney trails. His idea was to do way with stamps altogether and produce a machine that would permit frank the mail instead of stamp cancel it. In 1920 the first Pitney Bowes machine was made, it was the model A and by the December of that year the Post Office Department.

The initial machines were mechanical in nature, however today they are very much the part of the electronic evolution. There are machines that can frank 20 letters a day or over 500 depending on your company’s requirements.

If you are not sure if a franking machine is going to work out to be good value for money for your company then why not try before you buy. There are a number of companies that offer a franking machine rental service, this way you can try the system out and see how much money you could save by installing one on a permanent basis. If the trail fails you’ve lost nothing, but if it works then you’ve saved part of your budget that can be spent on something more important.

Till not so long ago, the world thrived in things mechanical. So much so that it extended into periods of time we are still unsure about. In fact some of the mechanical creations which were the marvels of old are so mind boggling that the latest technology cannot even hold a candle to it. While Enigin scam has the ability to garner interest and attention for a brief while, the mechanical ingenuity of old often holds us speechless, time notwithstanding.

Recently, I read an article about a clock that was made sometime in the early part of the last century. Every hour a gnome would come out of the innards of the clock with a small hammer, walk to a bell, strike it for the number of hours and then turn around to walk back inside! Now this was made at a time when there was no electricity and the mode of transport was the horse drawn carriage. Just imagine the ingenuity of the maker of such a clock. Further back in time there are the Pyramids of Egypt that befuddle us with the creativity and ingenuity used to transport such huge blocks of stone with a precision that puts modern inventions to shame. Or, take the Mayan calendar that is being followed so carefully now. They would have had sophisticated instruments to measure the slightest movements of the solar system.

Mechanical things have always fascinated us humans, which is why this is something that will never go out of style however developed the world becomes. At worst, they may become rare or few and hence might command a premium! It takes a lover of mechanics and a connoisseur to appreciate the intricate details that go into one such an object.

Water turbines are of course not a new concept, water turbines have been used to create power since the 19th century, where they were predominately used in industry, although it is documented that the Romans used water turbines also. These days, since the introduction of electrical grids wind turbines are still being utilised, but are deployed to create electric. If you live near a free flowing stream or river you can install a water turbine, with the correct planning of course.

Wind turbines are particularly attractive as a power source as they are a pollutant free and renewable energy source. Furthermore water turbines can successfully operate for decades and present a very cost effective way of producing energy. There are however some potential drawbacks of using water turbines that should be noted, mainly these derive from the fact that dams need to be installed when water turbine are used for power production. In a nutshell dams change the ecology of native rivers which can have potentially huge impacts on the lives of those who use the river for their livelihood, fishing etc.

Over the last few years eco friendly builds have become increasingly popular with a variety of people looking to build themselves an eco friendly and self sufficient home in many terms including power supply, for their family and their families'future generations. Consequently when land or adaptable current builds are being sort to create an eco friendly home, a site next to a water supply if very favourable as it enables the use of water turbine to power the home. You would of course need an experienced architect to help you build a home around such a power source, finding one who has worked o such projects before if essential if you want to avert a professional negligence claim!

There is no doubting that in today’s modern world, that man has produced a huge number of impressive mechanical feats ranging from micro machines that are smaller than your hand to huge mile long machines that can recreate the splitting of the atom. But are we to believe that there was never any complex machinery or tools made by much older civilisations that once occupied the globe? More and more evidence is surfacing that would suggest otherwise.

Just because the legacy left by these older civilisations was not a huge city of concrete and metal, and there were no non degradable rubbish tips full of plastic bottles and oil cans does not mean that these peoples did not possess the knowledge or understanding to create great mechanical technology.

If you look at the Egyptians for example, there are a whole host of buildings, temples, and artefacts that have been left for us to find that we are still unable to explain. This is because we are assuming that they were not capable of making complex items.

One of the greatest examples is the Great Pyramid of Giza. Many have said in the past that this is merely a large tomb to celebrate a pharaoh. But the more and more people investigate; it seems to have been built with more design and purpose than that.

The materials used, are of great electrical importance, and the shafts seem to have been designed in specific ways with insulating sandstone on the outside and highly conducting white granite to line the shafts.

The site of the pyramid is also of significance. It is built over a large limestone aquifer, and when the water level rises and falls, the movement of water through the underground network of channels actually creates an electric charge!

All of these elements, when looked at with an open mind make it seem like there may be more to the ancient site than meets the eye. If we can look into these things with an open mind, the possibilities of what was once there seem really exciting.

The precision of the build is also something to marvel at. We have been told that it was built by slaves. But the way the blocks have been cut and positioned seems more like the work of talented professionals, who could sue be sued for professional negligence in modern times, not the work of an unskilled slave who had no skill or understanding.

The phrase mechanical engineering conjures up images of over sized machines with huge valves, pistons and other components. However, mechanical engineering is not just about the study of mechanical movements. This just happens to be the most glamorous and visible aspect. Other activities related to mechanical engineering include design of the machines. This may not be comprehensively covered in mechanical engineering courses but it is impossible to become an expert in machines without considering design requirements. This is no different than a student of a HR course being taught the importance of data management tools. The two fields are related and must be studied together.

This is where the presence of computers and technology makes a huge difference to efficiency of the mechanical engineer. Designing machines is not just about making a device that will work properly. Certain practical considerations will also have to be kept in mind. On the face of it, making an automobile involves and nothing more than getting all the components to work together properly. However, the shape or design of the automobile is important considering the role of aerodynamics.

This must be kept in mind when designing the engine. Air flow into the engine will be unidirectional considering the fact that the vehicle will be primarily used to move forward. This is the reason why the front portion of the automobile consists of vents to allow cool air to flow into the hot engine sub-assembly.

This is the reason why a mechanical engineer requires a good imagination and creative process along with a firm grasp over the technical concepts. Coming up with the right design should include not just the present day requirements but the future needs as well.
If this is not given adequate importance in the beginning, the engineer will have to go back to the drawing board every single time a change in the working environment takes place. This will render the machine useless as even the slightest change will render the machine unworkable.

Long before computers invaded our lives one of the most sought after areas for students was the engineering stream. Particularly mechanical engineering, as it provided a lot of scope in terms of growth. The world was going through an industrial revolution and everything was, well…..mechanical! And this was the in thing!

In fact, mechanical engineering is not a new stream. It existed in ancient Greece, China and India. Some of them form the basis on which present day machines are made. I am sure you have heard of Stonehenge in Britain. How do you think these massive stone formations were transported? Around A.D. 100 there were water clocks and seismometers being made in China using this stream of science. Remember the times of old when chariots were used? Well, there were chariots with differential gears! And how about the world’s first known endless power-transmitting chain drive that was made more than a thousand years ago? Interesting, isn’t it? Of course, this stream came into glory only in the last century when the industrial revolution hit its peak by providing an enormous impetus to the development of machinery of all types, leading to the invention of the steam engine – the most glaring example in recent past!

While shopping online for skins compression shorts, I wondered at the different sizes, colours and the huge consumer demand that we have today. Supplying adequately to such a large consumer demand would not have been possible if we are not supported by these machines.

In numerous homes around the world, people use methods to stream line a task and make it simpler and easier to perform. It could be something as mundane as rolling up a napkin, but the principles can be traced to this science. It’s got lineage!

Graphene is an allotrope of carbon - it is composed of carbon atoms buts it does not form molecules but rather a dense net, crystal structure which is extremely thin and probably the strongest structure of one element in the nature. Just like the structure of graphite, atoms are connected to each other by gravity-creating bonds, however, much stronger and only one-atom-layer thick making graphene the thinnest material in the world. Its qualities were recently developed and examined by IBM, Nokia and other super technology giants that invested more than a billion Euros in researching an exploring the material.

According to physicist Novoselov, a Russian-British expert from University of Manchester and another Imperial College specialists, graphene is capable of transmitting electricity nearly 30 times faster than any other conductor of electric pulses thus being the most efficient energy transmitter ever known to mankind - it would allow signals to travel with speed nearing the speed of the light thus ensuring the greatest ever efficiency in internet and computer technology. No matter whether a computer is using octopus HR software of advanced NASA programs, the performance of the machine would be absolutely flawless, the processor would work on a hundred percent efficiency and the amount of information transmitted through the web can triple in quantity simply because 3 30 Mbits of speed would quite slow for internet traffic.

The technology would also allow space expeditions, scientific research, military operations and computer production to be conducted with even greater precision thus eliminating the risk of any production or operation mistakes.

Many persons find the field of mechanical technology to be very complicated and geeky. Well, is important to understand how mechanical technology works. Doing so will help you improve your efficiency in day to day activities. Surprised? Well, just visit a large format printing shop and find out how the machines work.

Which is the best method of pulling paper into the printing press? One would expect the machine to lift each and every sheet of paper individually. However, a huge role of paper is prepared and is fed into the machine on a continuous basis. Automation is important. What is more important is the right mechanical setup that will facilitate convenience and efficiency.

The next time you have to place mats on the dining table, you could try to visualize how the printing press machine would have done the task. By storing all the dining mats as rolls, you may find it easier to lay it on the table. This may sound like to small an issue to bother about. However, when you are tired from work and want to finish off your meals as early as possible, even this small thing may help save time.

Efficiency is not a matter of results. It is a matter of attitude. By learning more about such machines and the impact of engineering principles on their functioning, you can improve your standard of living. The only question is whether you are interested in doing so. That is all that matters to improve your life.

Love them or loathe them, mobile phones are a mechanical wonder the likes of which Captain Kirk never dared dream of in the 23rd Century. Personally I think there have been many more positives to mobile phones then there have negatives and I’m delighted with the progress that’s been made in the last decade.

All you have to do is take a look at news around the world about how mobiles have impacted on people’s lives in a positive manner. The BBC website reported how mobiles have offered lifelines to people and budding entrepreneurs in Africa. On that continent mobile technology is more of a necessity then broadband or laptops. Mobile has helped many people in Africa connect to each other either personally or through business.

The advance of worldwide roaming information has meant that everyone can use mobiles to connect with each other around the world without having to be Gordon Gekko to do it. The industry has come a long way since the ‘brick'first made its appearance in Wall Street back in the 80s. You no longer have to pay a fortune to use your phone when travelling.

With the addition of Smartphones to the market we are way beyond where any of us ever thought we would be with mobile technology. Apps, the internet and instant information are all available at the touch of a screen. In fact it’s not hard to imagine a time in the near future when holo-technology will become widely available. With 3D running rampant through the cinema industry, holograms via mobile technology are surely the next logical step.

Exciting times!

The Wright brothers are credited as the first people to have flown an aircraft however it may have been Richard Pearse from New Zealand that flew first. Pearse was just 26 when he decided to fly a monoplane he built and designed. This was in March 1903 eight months later the Wright Brother’s plane took off. The wing span of the machine that Pearse flew was 21-feet. The one who operated the machine had to sit beneath its wing and engine.

Those who witnessed the flight said that Pearse’s machine did make a few glides but the machine was not able to maintain a level of flight or gain altitude.

Pearse was much interested in mechanical objects while he was living on the family farm. He worked on improving devices that already existed and building new ones. His interest was more in aircrafts than in cycles. His very first invention that was patented in 1902 was an aircraft that had vertical-drive pedal action, a bamboo frame and a rod-and-rack system of gears.

His first flight lasted for about 50 yards and he crashed into a gorse fence. No one recorded the full details of the flight, his intention he said was to answer the problems with navigation of aerial vessels.

Pearse himself actually questioned the claim by his own witnesses that he had flown before the Wright Brothers. Regardless of if he was the first to fly or not Pearse’s machine included some important contributions to the history of flight. Just like the first types of hr software might not be the best hr software however they are still have had influence over the ones today.
